How To Advise On Winter Sun Protection

February 1, 2016 - Posted by Mickey Tortorelli

Winter had a late start this season but that doesn't mean we can slack with our UV protection - especially now that the snow is starting to stay on the ground. Here is a great article reminder from Cosmetics Business that you might want to pass along to your customers:

If your customers are going on a winter skiing holiday this year tell them to pack sunscreen. According to the British Skin Foundation the skin can burn in the snowy ski slopes and the amount of UV rays that reach the earth’s surface increases by up to 5% for every 1,000 feet above sea level. Plus, both ice and water are very good reflectors of UV radiation.

Consultant dermatologist and British Skin Foundation spokesperson Dr Anjali Mahto says: “It’s all too easy to forget about skin care when a customer is covered from head to toe, but at altitude, the risk of sunburn remains high. It’s vital to adequately protect exposed sites with high factor broad spectrum SPF and remember to reapply frequently.”

Here are Dr Mahto’s top tips for customers who are going on a winter skiing holiday:

Re-apply
Tell customers to re-apply sunscreen as frequently they would in the summer time to all exposed areas of the skin.

Take a second look
Customers should be reminded to apply sunscreen to those exposed areas that are often missed such as the ears, lips and back of the neck.

Moisturise
Stay moisturised. This won’t protect your customer’s skin from the sun, but winds and colder temperatures will strip the skin of its natural moisture, leaving it drier and more susceptible to cracking.

We'd love to hear what other tips do you have for your winter sports-loving customers. Please share them with us below!
