How to Combat Ingrown Hairs

February 7, 2014 - Posted by Mickey Tortorelli

A common concern for both men and women; ingrown hairs can be painful and cause tremendous discomfort.  Here’s a close look at how to address this pesky problem:

What are ingrown hairs and how do they form:

An ingrown hair is one that emerges from its follicle but continues to grow under the skin without pushing through the surface. This creates inflammation with redness and can be followed by a mild infection.

How can they be prevented?

1. Clean the skin before shaving with a gentle cleanser.

2. Use warm water and massage the skin with shaving cream to soften the skin.

3. Suggest a shaving cream that is fit for sensitive skin.

4. Moisturize daily.  Hydrating the skin will restore its natural protective barrier.

5. Exfoliate. Ridding the skin of dead cells and impurities will help refine the texture of the skin.

To fight against ingrown hairs, recommend:

  • A soothing cleanser
  • A shaving foam with anti-inflammatory benefits
  • A daily moisturizer
  • A facial exfoliator

“I have had the pleasure of crossing professional paths with Mickey many times, first working at Katz Groups, we were honored to have Mickey attend our Cosmetician Conference as a Motivational Speaker and address a room of more than 200 Cosmeticians. Mickey left the cosmeticians motivated, stimulated and proud of the service they provide. Our paths crossed again while I was working at Pierre Fabre where Mickey worked with the training department to develop an interactive web product knowledge course that takes a cosmetician for capable to being a powerhouse of confidence and knowledge. Mickey is a true professional who is passionate about all she does!!”
