Men's Hairstyling 101

June 12, 2015 - Posted by Mickey Tortorelli

Men's hairstyles seem to be ever-evolving and to accompany these styles, an overwhelming amount of products have surfaced the market - each with a seemingly precise function. As confusing as the products may seem, the products break down to three basic categories - gel, wax, and pomade.

GEL primarily keeps the hair in place all day, and tends to make the hair shiny. However, the shape can break apart or flake if the hair is over-handled after the gel dries. Gel is generally good for thick hair as it gives the strongest hold.

How to use: Work a dime size of the product into thoroughly washed, damp hair to avoid white flakes. More product can be added after if a greater hold is required.

Recommended gel: Jack Black Body-Building Hair Gel

WAX products will give a long lasting matte finish to the hair, and is the most versatile of the three categories. Depending on how much product is used, hairstyles can range from being relaxed to very controlled. Wax is best used for short to mid-length hair.

How to use: apply a small amount with both hands, and style hair to the desired shape. Blow dry the hair to maximize hold.

Recommended wax: Garnier Fructis Style Shine Wax

POMADE is a blend of wax and oil, and is used to achieve the classic look. These products usually give a nice shine to the hair but maintains a soft texture, so it is ideally used on curly hair. We do recommend using a water-based product so that it's easier to wash out afterwards.

How to use: rub a small amount of the product between your fingers and spread a small amount to where you want to shape or texture the hair. Make sure not to use too much to avoid the "greasy look".

Recommended pomade: got2b Playful texturizing cream pomade

For those blessed with luscious thick hair, sometimes they don't even need to consider any products - a little water, salt spray and a hairdryer will actually do the trick to give your hair structure and texture.

“It is proven that those who followed the CHANEL signature training course sold more CHANEL fragrances. A few Shoppers Drug Mart customers even noticed the extended knowledge and expertise of those who did the online training and praised those beauty advisors.”
