Skincare for Men

June 2, 2015 - Posted by Mickey Tortorelli

Women, without hesitation, will invest copious amounts of time and effort into their skin care regimen in order to protect their skin and preserve its youthfulness. However, many men are reluctant to do so as they don't understand the value in adopting their own routine, or they have no idea where to start. It is our duty as Beauty Advisors to help our male customers understand the benefits of taking care of their skin, select products addressing their concerns, as well as equip them with enough knowledge to select the most suitable products in the future. Remember to keep explanations simple so that the customers don't feel overwhelmed. Below is a basic skin care routine guide for men that will get you started with your male customers:

Purpose: Oils, dirt and pollution can get trapped in the pores over the day. A cleanser will wash off these impurities from the skin.

How-To: Dampen skin with warm water, spread a dime-sized amount of product onto the face and gently massage it around for about 1-minute. Rise off with cool water and pat the face dry. Use twice a day, daily.

Skin Types: dry skin - creamy soothing cleansers, oily/combination skin - foaming or gel cleanser

TONER (Optional)

Purpose: A cleanser removes most of the surface impurities, but using a toner helps remove last traces of impurities as well as residue from the cleanser. It also preps the skin to accept moisturizer more readily.

How-To: Pour some product onto a cotton pad and swipe across all areas of the face once. Follow after using a cleanser, two times a day, daily.

Skin Types: dry skin - alcohol-free toners,

Purpose: The skin continually renews itself, but may not shed off dead skin cells resulting in skin with a dull appearance. A face scrub will help slough off these dead cells to brighten and smoothen the skin's complexion.

How-To: Select a scrub with a very fine grit to prevent micro tears. Use a small amount and gently massage the product around a clean, dampened face for 1-minute. Rinse off with cool water and pat dry. Use 2-3 times a week.

*If the customer has sensitive skin, suggest that they use a scrub once a week only.

Purpose: Even washing the face with a mild cleanser can make the skin feel tight! Moisture content is also lost during hot showers as the pores are opened up. Using a moisturizer replenishes the moisture content of the skin.

How-To: Use a dime sized amount of product and pat onto the face evenly. Use after toner dries off, two times a day, daily.

Skin Types: dry - richer (creamy) moisturizer, oily/combination - lighter (gel) moisturizer

Purpose: The eye is the most delicate area of the face and is very prone to developing fine lines. Since the skin is a lot finer in this area, eye creams are formulated specially to moisturize this area effectively.

How-To: Dab a pea-sized amount of product between the ring fingers and lightly tap the product around the eye socket until the product is absorbed. Use twice a day, daily.

*Let your male customer know not to place the product too close to the eye, as it may cause irritation.
